2007 PTB Graduate Elected to Afghan Chamber of Commerce!
October 19th, 2011

2007 PTB Graduate and newly elected Afghan Chamber of Commerce Industry's Dir. of Membership, Qandi Amaki with the Afghan Chamber of Commerce

Congratulations to Qandi Amaki (Jan), who was just elected as the Afghan Chamber of Commerce Industry’s Director of Membership. Amaki, a 2007 inaugural PTB graduate, made history when she was first elected to this body because she was the only women ever allowed in. Now, she holds a higher position and credits IEEW’s work. “All of this success is a result of the PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS training …that provided me knowledge of professional consultation and public policy advocating,” said Amaki. “Before PTB training, I only had an interest in advocating for women but no one knew who I was.” Amaki says this position will allow her to actively encourage women to participate in micro-business actions in their society.

2010 Alumna, Marie Josée Kankera and 2011 Alumna, Teddy Gacinya were sworn in yesterday to Rwanda’s Parliamentary House.  Teddy, a newly appointed Senator and Marie Josée, one of the newly appointed members of Parliament, took their oath of office Wednesday and then were welcomed to the House by President Paul Kagame.

President Kagame noted that while there are challenges along the way, the most important thing is for the people to have the will and dedication to tackle them and even work harder for further progress.  The President then urged legislators to work hand-in-hand with their colleagues to fulfil the demands of the people, noting that as lawmakers their job is to work with others to serve the interests of the Rwandan people.

Way to Pay It Forward Teddy and Marie Josée!  There are no limits to how far the women of PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS can go!

Letters from Rwanda
December 2nd, 2010

Betty, a 2010 PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS graduate, co-owns Solidarity Academy School, a secondary private school in Rwanda. Mentored by Dr. Freda Deskin, Founder of ASTEC Charter School, Betty has been paying forward the education and training she received from our program and was kind enough to share it with us!

Good morning Terry,

I am always humbled by the way you update us and continue empowering us as we struggle to empower others! By the way, did you know that most business women in Rwanda aren’t very conversant with computers and cannot buy them because they’re so expensive? But, with the Institute, every woman has been made computer literate and can exploit a lot of business with a computer. Once again,

I’m so happy to get the chance to write to you to tell you how I’m paying it forward since I completed your PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS program! My first assignment was to educate illiterate mothers about safe family planning, as well as help them understand that it is vital to their lives, as well as their families. By doing one-on-one coaching sessions with them, I have managed to convince them and delegate them in educating others on the topic as well! I can honestly tell you that when I came back to my country from the United States with an assignment of paying it forward, I have much more zeal!

Since returning to my home country, I have also formed a partnership with two of my friends, mobilizing women to make baskets and other art crafts. We now export the goods to New York! This is increasing job opportunities for illiterate women in Rwanda, and this type of job is not so taxing on them, as the women do it while seated in the shade.

I also connected some other women to many contacts in New York so that they can also solicit the market, hence increasing jobs in art crafts and generating revenue for themselves! It’s a little too early to access the results yet, but most mothers with students at my school are illiterate, yet they’re now involved in such type of business.

I will continue informing you about my pay it forward achievements, as it is a very long process. Terry, you will continue to remain our hero as ”we educate and empower women” across the globe.

Blessings,

Betty

Gloria’s business has expanded!
April 2nd, 2009

multiple-colorsGloria Uwizera, 2008 PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS graduate and owner of GLO CREATIONS, sent photos of her new endeavor.

She reports:

I would like to share some news with you. For the first news, after my return from the US, I thought of making cushion covers but It took me some time to prepare the designs for it. The first cushion covers were released in  mid-October last year. Since that time, the cushion covers were selling better than t-shirts. This year the demand for a variety of sizes is there.

As well as adding sizes,  I  have a lot to improve on the uniqueness, color and quality of the cushion covers. In order to make all the sizes for a big quantity, I will have to get a very good sewing machine and a specialized tailor. In the meantime I am working with some individual tailors.

The second news that I’d like to report is that I and some partners opened a shop within the city of Kigali in mid February. We spent all the month of February setting up things till the beginning of March.

I have two female partners and a male partner, they are in the handcrafts sector. Our shop’s name is AFRICAN GIFT CORNER, and I was appointed to manage the shop.

This month of April, I am hoping to start making table cloths which should match with the cushion covers. Since the beginning of this year, the sales have been decreasing and our production has been affected by this decrease but I hope things will get much well.

I would say, what we have learned from the training, it’s really helping. I have been working on the networking part and on the products expansion part which is not always an easy part. I will stay in touch.

Real Innovations reporting growth!
March 24th, 2009

Juliet Mbabazi, a 2008 PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS graduate and co-owner of Real Innovations, an event and branding company, reports great successes in her business: Negotiations are underway with two sizable companies for contract awards. Though talks continue, one contract is near completion but details are not yet available. The awards could represent a valuable 5-year agreement in one deal and the second could open the door to more business. We will post updates as available.

Real Innovations has started the process of bringing in-house more of the tasks formerly outsourced to strategic alliances. This allows more quality control and better response time. This will translate into more employment opportunities for the community as the Real Innovations management team plans to add at least two positions.

On a personal note, Juliet joined the Chamber of Women Entrepreneurs under the Private Sector Federation and was elected Rwanda coordinator for EAWEeex together with another colleague Janet Nkubana. EAWEeex stands for Eastern African Women Entrepreneurs Exchange and Networking. It is a round-table arrangement to rotate amongst all member countries. The coordinators’ role is to mobilize and organize in-country. What a remarkable chance to NETWORK!

And, of course, Juliet is excited about the opportunity to “pay forward” by teaching a class for PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS in 2009.  IEEW knew we could count on Juliet’s willingness to participate!
